Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool

The witty actor will dawn the black and red suit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Gavin Hood's X-Men Origins: Wolverine is going to be one crowded flick. According to AICN Ryan Reynolds will suit up as anti-hero Deadpool in Fox's 2009 blockbuster. If that wasn't enough, the film will also showcase Liev Schreiber's Sabertooth, obese villian The Blob, the red-headed Silver Fox, and mercenary William Stryker.

Ryan Reynolds (Smokin' Aces, Van Wilder) playing Deadpool is great news. He's quick-witted and has great delivery and has shown interest in playing the character over the past few years. He'll make a great Deadpool if the character is written close to the comic source material. Many people have been dying to see him dawn the character's red and black hood and I'm one of them. This is great news, hopefully it leads to a spin-off Deadpool flick.

The Blob, however, is an unusual choice for a villain in the film. The character is known for his puncture-proof skin and his obesity. He's a fatty, weighing in at roughly 1000 pounds, and will be played be a dude in a fat suit. I don't see the comic character working well on film. He'll most likely come off as immature and comedic and will have a hard time being taken seriously if it's just a dude dressed in fat-padding.

William Stryker, played by the great Brian Cox (Zodiac, Troy) in the previous X-Men films, will be played by actor Danny Huston (30 Days of Night, Children of Men) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The character will be much younger than he was in the first two X-Men films but will play a key role in Wolverine's origin story. Lynn Collins (The Number 23, 13 Going on 30) will play Silver Fox, Wolverine's love-interest in the film.

I think that this film is taking the wrong path. The film should focus on Wolverine and his birth as a hero, not spread the spotlight around with five other characters dying for screen time. Brett Ratner's X-Men 3 didn't work because it introduced so many new characters but didn't allow the time to develop them. There's no need to introduce so many sideshow characters, save them for sequels or, in Deadpool's case, give them their own title films. I would have been content seeing Sabertooth as the film's only villain, there's no need for anyone else. As much as I can't wait to see Ryan Reynolds play Deadpool I think Marvel is going overboard with this film.

Where do you guys think this film is headed? Will it be a success or is it going down the toilet with all these casting decisions? Post a comment and voice your opinion.

Cheers.
